It is my first time producing creating a fashion film! Although it cannot be compared to other higher quality, award winning films, I think in order to create a really good masterpiece, you need to create 100 more lousy ones. Practice makes perfect, as they say.
So I hooked up with my friend at Urban Niche, which we did an almost spontaneous in a matter of days.
The days leading up to the shoot, I was watching YouTube videos for references and inspirations. They say that great artist steals from many artists and add in a personal touch. I can totally agree with that as I have been doing that with my photography career.
I have also done a very simple storyboard just to visualise how the sequence flows. This is also one of the very few times that I actually had to put down my ideas in form of story board. I think this is a good practice but also limits the creativity idea that flows on shooting day itself.
On the actual shoot day I shot accordingly to my storyboard. I did cover the basic shots, wide + medium + tight, but on editing I found that I need more footages from different angles as well. All the while I was working on the wide + medium + tight shots on a very similar angle. On editing I find it very hard to piece them together because it looks too similar to other shots. Well, lesson learnt.
During the shoot I only had the basic camera body with a Joby Gorillapod as a make shift camera handle of some sort. It helped me to stabilise the camera for some of the panning shots. I was holding the camera with both of my hands, while had the Gorillapod against my chest for extra support. I find this extremely helpful because it creates a fulcrum for panning shots.
I also had a difficulty focusing on the model, especially if it’s a non static shot. It was quite hard to have the focus following the model. I have since then ordered a 7 inch on camera monitor to deal with this. :D
So this is it, the very first fashion film created by me. Looking forward to create a better film next time!
